Coach: Malaysian players are well suited to pickleball and padel

A national coach has argued that Malaysian players are well placed to make their mark in the fast-growing racquet sports of pickleball and padel, pointing to the country’s broader strength across racquet disciplines.
Both sports have expanded rapidly around the world in recent years, including across Southeast Asia, drawing in recreational players and building a competitive scene. Each shares clear common ground with tennis — court craft, hand-eye coordination, fast reactions and net play — which can ease the crossover for players with a tennis or badminton background.
Malaysia’s pedigree in racquet sports is well established through badminton and squash, where the country has produced world-class names. The case being made is that the same athletic traits, reflexes and coaching culture could transfer effectively into pickleball and padel.
The realistic caveat is infrastructure: building competitive depth in any new sport depends on facilities, coaching pathways and a regular tournament calendar, all of which are still developing for pickleball and padel in Malaysia. The coach’s point is about latent potential rather than results already on the board.
